From a rail workers' first payslip to their final pension payment, we stand beside our members throughout their career and into their retirement. Driven by our member-first culture, it's about excellent quality service that combines clear, timely information and tools with care and compassion.
Our members and the schemes we operate
Who our members are
We have 350,000 train workers, signal operators, clerical workers, ticket collectors, in fact the whole diverse population of railway workers who keep Britain moving, and rely on what we do to give them better financial outcomes when they choose to retire.
The four railways pension schemes
Railpen operate and administer four railways pension schemes on behalf of The Railway Pensions Trustee Company Limited.
Two of these schemes are closed to new members:
The British Railways Superannuation Fund (BRSF)
BR (1974) Pension Fund
The following two schemes are open to new members:
Our commitment
Rail workers have kept Britain moving for 200 years and we’ve been delivering for our members since our beginnings in 1965.
From the first contact we have with a rail worker who’s just joined the scheme, through the support we give them at key stages in their working life, or a key life event, to helping them when they’re accessing their retirement savings, our commitment to member outcomes and our member-first ethos runs deep.
Building on our member-first foundations
Hear from Nic Cromack on why providing a consistently high, member‑first service 'isn’t just our inspiration – it’s our obligation'.
It’s about laying strong foundations that help us deliver excellent outcomes for the 350,000 members we serve, today and in the future.
