Railpen takes leading role in £1bn+ UK Scale-up Fund

Railpen, manager of the £34bn Railways Pension Scheme, has taken a leading role in establishing the UK Scale-up Fund - a new £1bn+ vehicle bringing together pension providers to invest in Britain's most promising growth companies right across the country.

This is exactly the kind of strategic collaboration we’ve been calling for. With our extensive track record investing in high-growth UK companies for the benefit of our members, we know first-hand the power of patient, long-term capital to transform innovation into growth for our members, for businesses, and for the country.

As our CEO, Andy Bord said: "Our priority is always to deliver strong long-term outcomes for our members. The UK is a dynamic powerhouse of innovation. The UK Scale-up Fund represents a compelling investment opportunity where disciplined, patient capital can help growing companies scale, provide attractive returns for pension savers and generate lasting economic growth.

“We are pleased to have helped shape this initiative, which will play a vital role in supporting ambitious companies with global reach to build their future here in the UK, creating a stronger economy for our members to retire into.”

Win-win-win

This fund will create a triple win - ambitious UK scale-ups get the growth capital they need to build global businesses. By creating more funding opportunities in their home market, the global businesses of tomorrow will be able to remain in the UK throughout their life - from the lightbulb moment of a world-class idea, right through to publicly listing on UK markets.

Pension savers will also benefit from attractive long-term returns, a stronger UK economy, and a more dynamic, innovative country to retire into. That's the kind of impact we're proud to champion.

The fund has the full backing of the UK Government, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham noting that: “This new fund would help unlock good growth in every postcode, connecting pension investment with the entrepreneurs and technologies that will reindustrialise Britain and create the jobs of the future.”

Railpen is joined in the initiative by Nest, LPPI, LGPS Central, Border to Coast, the British Business Bank and the Office for Investment.

We’re thrilled to help shape it and look forward to backing the next generation of UK success stories.
