Railpen announces new charity partnership with the Railway Benefit Fund

Railpen is proud to announce a new charity partnership with the Railway Benefit Fund (RBF) – a charity that, for over 165 years, has been a lifeline for railway workers and their families. From station and maintenance crews to train drivers, support staff and other key workers, RBF provides vital help through illness, injury, financial hardship and challenging life events, improving lives across the UK rail industry.

The partnership builds on our shared commitment to supporting the people who keep Britain’s railways running. Since 1965, Railpen has been managing the pensions of rail industry workers, rooted in origins as the pensions office for the British Rail Pension Scheme. Railpen’s history and member-first culture are closely aligned with RBF’s mission to make a tangible difference to the lives of those in the rail community.

Railpen CEO Andy Bord said: “We’ve been working alongside RBF for years – the Heart of Gold Awards being one of our annual highlights as a key sponsor. This latest announcement during Railway 200 reinforces our shared commitment to the rail industry and the people within it who’ve connected places, people and communities for 200 years and who continue to shape national life.”

RBF’s work extends far beyond emergency support. The charity runs initiatives such as the Heart of Gold Awards, which celebrate individuals in the rail industry who have gone above and beyond, and fundraising activities such as the Million Step Challenge, which raised over £13,000 this year. Railpen has been an active supporter of these initiatives and will continue to work with RBF on new opportunities to raise awareness, strengthen community connections and deliver practical support to those who need it most.

Jo Kaye, CEO of the Railway Benefit Fund, said: “We are pleased to be deepening our long-standing relationship with Railpen. This partnership will be vital in helping us continue our work across the UK rail community. By working together, we can expand our reach and ensure that more railway people have a helping hand when they need it most.”

Railpen’s collaboration with RBF will be continuing to support flagship events and introducing new joint initiatives, underpinned by shared passion for rail and its people. From celebrating outstanding achievements to providing everyday assistance, this partnership reflects Railpen’s ongoing dedication to the rail community – past, present and future.

A video interview with RBF Charity President Pete Waterman captures the true spirit of our partnership and why supporting the rail community matters. Pete echoes that railways people have always had a tremendous and somewhat unique social culture - and that this is evident year on year, with the wide-reaching community initiatives driven by rail people - this partnership helps celebrate this.
