We're proud to serve the rail industry

Railpen is entrusted with a significant responsibility – one that we're proud to deliver. 

We look after and invest around £34bn in assets of the railways pension schemes as well as looking after the needs of its 350,000 or so members, supporting them throughout their lives and into retirement. 

Our schemes are made up of over 110 employers across rail, forming the Railways Pension Scheme (RPS), as well as the British Transport Police Force Superannuation Fund (BTPFSF).  

We're driven by our purpose

Our purpose is to secure our members' future and the world they retire into.  

We use our combined experience, expertise and passion to support members throughout their careers and into retirement and strive to create a better world for them to retire into.  

Helping members plan their pension journey and achieve the best possible outcome is our privilege. Members are at the heart of how we care and support them throughout career and life changes. 

Our people understand the difference we can make to the lives of our members. Their unique experiences and shared passion for our purpose shapes how we serve both our members, and their employers, who trust us to look after their employees’ pensions. 

Our heritage in rail gives us our name

We've been looking after the pension needs of the rail industry and its employees for almost 60 years – it's what gives us our name and our unique outlook on how we serve our members.  

We started out as the pension office for the British Rail pension scheme in 1965. And then, in 1994, following the privatisation of the railway industry and reorganisation of the British Rail Pension Scheme, the RPS was formed and Railpen was appointed as its guardian.  

Through the many changes in rail, we’ve innovated and evolved our journey to align it with the rail industry, taking on board the challenges and direction of travel. We’ve formed lasting relationships and focus on delivering high-quality service that’s guided by genuine care and compassion and is ultimately driven by our purpose to secure our members’ future.
